Totems on display

Our Aboriginal Totem canvases are currently on display at the Northern Beaches Council Warringah Mall Library.

They certainly showcase the amazing artistic talents of the staff and students at Stewart House School. Each Totem represents one of the six classes at the school.

Yarning circle

Over the holidays we were hard at work building a Yarning Circle to complement our Aboriginal programme.

The Yarning Circle is a place where everyone can learn as a collective group, build respectful relationships, and preserve and pass on cultural knowledge.

By using a yarning circle as a teaching space, participants' understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and ways of working are enhanced and all students grow through these meaningful learning experiences.

We are very grateful to our generous supporters who made the project possible, including the thirteen volunteers from the Bank of America and the BushLink team; and Plateau Trees, Australian Native Landscapes and Kennards Hire who assisted with raw materials and equipment hire. The Yarning Circle grant was given by the Northern Beaches Council as one of their Community, Arts and Culture Grants and also from a fundraiser held by Aboriginal Support Group Manly Warringah .

Recognition for outstanding teacher

Ms Cathy Brennan, Executive Director School Performance, recently recognised school teachers and executive staff in Metropolitan North Operational Directorate for their significant role in contributing to public education.

Ms Sharon Smithies, Assistant Principal of Stewart House received recognition in the Department of Education’s core values of ‘Trust’ and ‘Service’. Demonstrating an extraordinary ability to connect with and change the lives of children in a career spanning 35 years, Ms Smithies was one of only two recipients in the Beaches Network to receive the coveted award.

Out of the Earth art exhibition

Executive Director's Award

Congratulations to our Administrative Staff and School Learning Support Officers who have been awarded the prestigious Metropolitan North Operations Directorate Executive Director's award for significant contribution!

Ours is a unique school, and our staff willingly go beyond their primary purposes of supporting students and assisting teachers and we are thrilled that their contribution has been recognised with this award. They assist with everything from bus driving to food preparation while all the time creating a welcoming, caring and empathetic environment for our students during their stay.

ANZAC remembrance ceremony at Harbord Diggers

A large group of students from Upper Hunter, Tamworth and Hornsby took part in a special ANZAC ceremony at the Harbord Diggers.

We were privileged to have Ray McMinn, father of our Aboriginal Education Officer, Jed, welcome us to country. After addresses by James Griffin, the local member of Parliament, and the president of the Harbord Sub-Branch, the children planted poppies in the outside garden along with the plaque pictured above. These beautiful ceramic poppies were made by students who have visited Stewart House duiring term 1 in their pottery classes with our SLSO, Bronwyn Barnett.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.
