Wellbeing and safety

Wellbeing Framework

Stewart House School works in partnership with Stewart House Organisation to deliver the Stewart House Program. This is underpinned by the Stewart House Wellbeing Framework.

Stewart House School provides teaching and learning experiences based upon social and emotional learning, experiential learning and having healthy, safe and active experiences.

Healthy, Safe and Active Experiences relate to the extent to which students feel physically safe and healthy.

Social and Emotional Learning are interrelated:

·         Social learning includes the extent to which we experience positive relationships and connectedness to others. It is important for pro-social behaviour and our empathy toward others;

·         Emotional learning relates to self-awareness and emotional regulation. It includes how well we cope, and is often reflected by the level of a person’s resilience. Emotional wellbeing is in part informed by our capacity for self-reflection.

Experiential learning involves students participating in off-site activities and is key to developing experiences and opportunities in which to apply the skills taught inside classrooms and cabins. It also provides opportunities to receive feedback from students in a comfortable, in-formal and safe environment.

The relationships fostered between children and staff are key to the success of the program. A planned approach with clear, predictable boundaries and consequences plus scope for choice, is essential in establishing a safe environment for learning.

Stewart House Values

Simply treating others with respect, empathy and honesty. It’s about showing care in our words and actions, including everyone and making choices that are just and considerate. By being kind and fair, we help create a positive, safe and supportive school community for everyone
Looking after ourselves and others by making responsible choices. It’s about following rules, using equipment properly and being aware of our surroundings. When we act safely, we prevent harm, build trust and ensure our school is a secure place where everyone can learn and grow with confidence.
Trying your best, even when something feels new or challenging. It’s about being brave, giving things a try, and not being afraid to make mistakes. By having a go, we learn, grow our confidence and discover what we’re capable of achieving together and on our own.

Dealing with Homesickness:

For most children attending Stewart House, 12 days is the longest time they will have been away from home. It is natural for children to experience a mix of feelings—excitement, curiosity, nervousness—as well as homesickness. Being in a completely new environment, away from the people and routines that make them feel safe, can feel overwhelming at first. Some children may experience stronger feelings and need extra support during their stay. Homesickness is not a sign of weakness, but a normal response to change, and our experienced staff are here to help your child feel safe, supported, and enjoy their time at Stewart House.

Strategies to consider to support kids with homesickness before departure:

1. Involve your children in decisions and preparation

Empower children by including them in decisions regarding their upcoming trip. Explain purpose of the trip and the positives in attending.

2. Pack a comforting item

Bringing an item from home, such as a favourite toy, artwork, pillow, book or photo, can provide a valuable source of comfort for kids while they’re away.

3. Address concerns about trip

Encourage open communication by addressing any concerns or fears your child may have.

4. Practice coping strategies

Relax by playing games, deep breathing, and mindfulness activities are a few to consider.

5. Go through daily activities

Keeps children informed and prepared for what’s ahead, so they can open up and discuss any concerns
